Anyone but You
Anyone but You by Will Gluck is a breath of fresh air in the romantic comedy genre. Not that it’s revolutionary by any means, but it is the first time in a while that a rom-com hasn’t immediately felt corny. In the first five minutes, the film dives right into classic romantic tropes: a charming meet-cute at a coffee shop, a comically illogical water mishap resembling peeing your pants, and a magical night in a cookie-cutter bachelor pad straight out of Ikea. But the plot takes an unexpected turn when our leading lady decides to sneak out the morning after, only to return just in time to overhear the leading man's not-so-flattering comments about the girl who seemingly ghosted him. This twist sets the stage for a romantic comedy filled with heart, humor, and a touch of vulnerability. It’s a good thing these two unspeakably hot people who hate each other with the lustful fire of a thousand suns will never cross paths again, right! A destination wedding in Australia begs to differ.
I think this movie does a great job at separating itself from the stereotypes of romantic comedies because of the behaviors of the characters. It’s not that this movie is unpredictable or groundbreaking, but it also does not feel like a movie I have already seen, which I find most rom-coms can. The character chemistry and comedic elements were fantastic and I think this is a fun watch. If it wasn’t facing such heavy competition in the box office, I think a movie like this has potential to be big, like The Proposal.
